Prep Students Win 18th Annual African American History Challenge
Posted 02/09/2018 04:57PM

Congratulations to seniors Leon Gordon Jr., Marcus Vaughn-Jones and Tyler White-Welchen and their coach and Director of Student Advocacy and Outreach Allen Burrell Jr. on their victory on Saturday, February 3 in the 18th Annual African American History Challenge sponsored by 100 Black Men of Omaha, Inc., an organization committed to mentoring, education, health & wellness and economic empowerment in the African American community.

“It was a great performance by the Prep students, and I think the academic rigor they experience at the school helped prepare them well for the competition,” said Allen. The high school division included teams from Prep as well as Benson, Bryan, Central, North and South, and the competition was held at Omaha North High STEM Magnet School.

Preparation began at Prep in October with the book “Life Upon These Shores: Looking at African American History 1513-2008” by Harvard University professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. , and it was supplemented by study guides provided by 100 Black Men of Omaha, Inc.
