An $80,000 lead gift from alumnus James O’Brien ’65 and his wife Barbara has completed fundraising by Creighton Prep for 200 state-of-the-art Riddell football helmets purchased earlier this year to outfit all players on all five of its football teams. The school was the first in the state of Nebraska to make such a comprehensive commitment.
“We are extraordinarily grateful to Jim and Barb for the incredible support that will allow us to take the care of our football players to another level,” said Creighton Prep President Fr. Tom Neitzke, S.J. “They are remarkable examples of what it means to live in the service of others, which is a core value we stress on an ongoing basis with the young men at Prep.”
“Barb and I are pleased to be able to help Creighton Prep in its formative work through this gift,” said Jim. “We were looking for a new opportunity to show our support for the school, and this was a great fit.”
During his time at Prep, Jim was a standout athlete, and became an all-state running back who helped lead the varsity football team to two state titles. He was inducted in the Creighton Prep Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010 as a member of the 1964 state champion basketball team, in 2011 as both an individual athlete and as a member of the 1962 football team that came back from a slow start to win the Intercity title, and, in 2014, as a member of 1963 state champion football team.
He has also served the school as a member of the Board of Trustees, including as chairman for seven years, and is a member of the Council of Regents that serves as an executive advisory group to Fr. Neitzke. Most recently, Jim was the featured speaker at the President’s Mass and Brunch on Sunday, May 7 where he outlined the reasons why he and Barb have committed themselves as planned givers to Prep.
