THE SEPTEMBER 11TH PARENT PULSE

HEAD OF SCHOOL UPDATE

Dear Parents,

Thank you to everyone who took the time over the last week to fill out our feedback form on the first month of school under our pandemic response plan. If you have not had a chance to do so already, we will keep the survey open until Monday morning. Click HERE if you would like to participate and thanks for your thoughtful reflections as we continue to look for ways to adapt and improve over the weeks ahead.

As you know, this last week we witnessed the far-reaching implications that one or two positive cases can have on our programming. A few other large schools have just recently found themselves facing similar circumstances. We think it is important to remind everyone that we work closely with the Douglas County Health Department to help them with their contact tracing investigation and communication, but it is their public health officials who issue quarantine orders, not the school. We are not at liberty to lift or adapt those orders.

It is a good reminder for all of us to continue practicing preventative measures like wearing masks, washing hands, staying six feet apart from others in and out of school, scanning temperatures each morning, and completing our COVID screener before coming to school.

AMDG,

Jim Bopp

COVID-19 HEALTH UPDATES

Daily Self-Screening Reminders

  • All students are required to use Creighton Prep's self-screening app every morning prior to coming to school. This should be done under the supervision of a parent when possible.

  • Ms. Corrigan sent all students an email last week detailing information about the self-screening app. If students have trouble navigating the app or completing the screening please click here to review the information she sent. If you are still having trouble please email our school nurse Ms. Corrigan.

  • When completing the screening process, students will either receive a green check or red X. Below are details about what students should do when prompted with either of those symbols.

  • If you receive a green checkmark icon like the one pictured here after completing the self-screening app, then you are ok to attend school that day.

Alternate text

  • If you receive a red x icon like the one pictured here after completing the self-screening app, you (the student or parent) need to contact the school nurse immediately via email or phone, 402-393-1190. This communication is mandatory.

STUDENT NEWS

Eight National Merit Semifinalists Named

Congrats to these eight seniors, who with hard work and probably many late nights studying, were named National Merit Semifinalists: Maximus Lauritsen, Michael Lukaszewicz, Benjamin Lyons, Colin Mahoney, Dominic Mendlik, Jackson Morris, Kevin Prososki and Patrick Rogers. They represent 1% of the 1.6 million students that participated. Finalists will be named in February then a smaller group of those will be announced in the spring as scholarship recipients.

MENTAL HEALTH PRACTITIONER UPDATE

As we know, navigating the world of parenting a teen is not always a piece of cake. Especially when we have to have that awkward conversation that we’ve hoped they have had context with it at school or even on the internet. Yes, we have made strides throughout time in realizing that suicide is a reality that has befallen our society and culture, especially that of our adolescents and young adults. Using the context of culture and society, if your child has a moderate level of social media presence, the likelihood of them knowing of someone considering, attempting to, or successfully taking their own life is likely. Read more and start the conversation with your son.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY

The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) allows Creighton Prep to nominate one student in grades 9-12 to receive the 2021 Prudential Spirit of Community Award.  The focus is on young volunteers who have made a positive difference in their community. (Last year’s Nebraska state nominee raised over $72,000 for cancer research by hosting a lemonade stand she created when she was six years old.) Interested students can go to spirit.prudential.com and nassp.org/spirit for more information. Applications are due by November 10, 2020. Winners may earn a $1000 scholarship.

The Rosary to Support Freshman Retreat – Thursday, February 6

The Prep community is invited to the Rosary to Support Freshman Retreat on Thursday, February 6 at 6:15 p.m. at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church (6116 Dodge Street). Freshman parents should drop off their sons at Prep prior to attending.

This beautiful and meaningful event intensifies the prayer by mentioning each student by name. It is a powerful way for parents to be involved in the retreat without actually being there.

The Rosary to Support Freshman Retreat is organized by CP Parents Praying with St. Ignatius. If you have questions or would like to assist with the Rosary, please contact Jeanne Schulte.

CP Parents Praying with St. Ignatius Meeting – Monday, February 10

Mark your calendars now and plan to attend the meeting of the CP Parents Praying with St. Ignatius retreat experience on Monday, February 10 from 6:45-8:30 p.m. in Room 118, located on the first floor of Creighton Prep in the hallway south of the former main entrance (just north of the chapel). Director of Adult Spirituality Fr. Kevin Schneider, SJ will guide the meeting.

Our guest speaker will be Mr. Daniel Kennedy, SJ – a Jesuit scholastic who is the director of student activities and a theology faculty member. He attended St. John’s Jesuit High School in Toledo, Ohio, where he was born and raised. In 2012, he completed his bachelor’s degree in philosophy and theology at Boston College, and entered the Chicago-Detroit Province of the Society of Jesus after graduation.

Uniquely designed with busy parents in mind, this spiritual journey takes the four-week Ignatian retreat and spreads it over nine months. Fr. Kevin leads the group in prayer, teaching and discussion of the Spiritual Exercises. He also suggests ways that participants can live the retreat each day.
