A Jesuit Reflection
SKINNER CHAPEL RELICS
In our day and age, the whole idea of relics may seem strange. Yet all of us treasure things that belonged to someone we love--a piece of clothing, a lock of hair, a letter. From a purely historical sense, we value objects of “martyrs” like the blood-stained pillow on which Abraham Lincoln died. Such "relics" remind us of our love or admiration for a person even after death. A religious relic can be a piece of the body of a saint, an item owned or used by the saint, or an object which has been touched to the tomb of a saint.
Catholics venerate but do not worship saints’ relics; worship is reserved to God alone. The veneration of sacred relics has a long history in the Church. A letter written by the faithful of the Church in Smyrna in the year 156 provides an account of the death of their bishop, St. Polycarp, burned at the stake. "We took up the bones, which are more valuable than precious stones and finer than refined gold, and laid them in a suitable place, where the Lord will permit us to gather ourselves together as we are able, in gladness and joy, and celebrate the birthday of his martyrdom." By the 12th century, relics venerated in churches and shrines attracted numerous pilgrims. Most Catholic altars today contain one or more relics, recalling our link with the saints as well as the practice of celebrating Mass on martyrs’ tombs in the catacombs before Christianity was legal.
Veneration of saints’ relics proclaims Catholic belief in several fundamental doctrines: the dignity of the human body and the respect due toward the bodies of both the living and the deceased; the resurrection of the body for all persons on the last day; the reward of everlasting life for those who have obediently witnessed to Christ on earth; the saints’ special intercessory power in heaven because of their intimate relationship with Christ the King; and our communion with the saints. Ultimately, relics remind us of the holiness of the saints and their cooperation in God's work. They also inspire us to seek the saints’ prayers and beg God’s grace to live holy lives ourselves.
In Skinner Chapel are displayed the relics of the following saints:
St. Ignatius Loyola | St. Frances Xavier | St. Robert Bellarmine (1542-1621) |
(1491-1556) | (1506-1552) | St. Jean de Brebeuf (1593-1649) |
St. Charles Garnier (1606-1649)
St. Gabriel Lalemant (1610-1649)
St. Francis of Assisi | St. Thomas Aquinas | St. Francis of Assisi |
(1181-1226) | (1225-1274) | (1181-1226) |
St. Catherine of Siena | St. Aloysius Gonzaga | St. Rita of Cascia |
(1347-1380) | (1568-1591) | (1381-1457) |
