Scripture is more than a story; it is an invitation to a way of life. The Scriptures challenge us to ask ourselves, “Who am I?”, “Why am I here?”, and “What am I going to do with my life?” Fortunately, the Scriptures give us an answer to these questions. The answer revolves around the concept of service.
In terms of service we would answer the questions in this manner:
Who am I? A servant.
Why am I here? To serve.
What
am I going to do with my life?
Serve God’s people.
And how we will strive for MAGIS? As leaders of those who serve God’s people.
As servant leaders you will be in charge of locating, organizing and directing service experiences for your peers. You will work in pairs, and I will be your mentor and guide in this process. Together we will build a service experience for a small group of your peers.
When you are not a leader, you will attend at least one other service experience during the semester. You will have the option of attending more if you choose. As a non-leader you will be involved in assessing those who led the experience.
The service projects will involve direct interaction with people in need. We will not be cleaning parks, or collecting clothes for clothing drives. For example, we will build houses for and with the poor – or perhaps we will serve food to the homeless. We might find ourselves performing a play for an elementary school. (There is no limit to our options). In all opportunities we will bring ourselves face to face with God’s people.
In addition, the service projects will involve guided reflections. We will pray together. We will discuss faith together, and in doing so we will place our faith at the center of our actions.
The service projects will take place on Saturday mornings, and you will need to commit at least 2 hours and at most 3 hours for each experience. We will meet at Prep on service days, and I will take a group (in a school van) to the service site.
If you have a parent that is interested in chaperoning, please have them call or email me (see information below). Also, have them provide a number where I can reach them.
I am looking forward to working with each of you. Together we will embrace the invitation to build the kingdom of God. In doing so, our exploration of scripture, as well as our life experiences, will be greatly enriched.
If you or your parents have any questions, please call me at school (393-1190) or email me at: rches@prep.creighton.edu
