World History I

Syllabus Fall 2005

Fr. Lynch, SJ

393-1190

The aim of education should be to teach us rather how to think, than what to think—rather to improve our minds, so as to enable us to think for ourselves, than to load the memory with the thoughts of other men.  John Dewey

Materials:  Required materials:

*A spiral notebook

*A two-pocket folder

*A pencil with an eraser

*Felt-tip markers/pens of different colors (not Sharpies)

*Two highlighters of different colors

*Buy one “Fat Lil’ Notebook.” Office Max: 69th & Dodge or 132nd & West Center.  You will need at least four by the end of the year.

Homework: All papers will be typed.  If a student does not have access to a computer, Prep has a wonderful computer lab.  There are no excuses for non-typed work.  Papers are to include the student’s name, date, and class period on the right hand side of the first page.  All homework is to be completed and turned in on time.  I do not accept late work.  Failure to do so will result in ninth hour and will not be accepted for credit.  There is no reason to turn homework in late.  If a student is absent when work is assigned, there will be a one-day make up for completion of all homework.  Class assignments will be accessible through the homepage which is currently stored on the Prep website, under Fr. Lynch’s name in the Social Studies department section.  http://creightonprep.creighton.edu  Once there, you must go to Moodle.  PARENTS, your son will always have homework.  Although your son may not have a written assignment on a given night he will have reading or studying.  Your son should review material every night.  There is much material and failure is a real possibility without regular study.

Exams:  Students will take several tests and quizzes throughout the year.  Announced and unannounced quizzes will be given every week.  Students are responsible for making arrangements with the teacher for make-up exams.  The teacher will not track you down.  Tests and quizzes will be made up during study hall or lunch.  If you are absent for non-legitimate reasons you will not be able to make up an exam.  Any missed work or exams not made up within the “window of opportunity” will be counted as a failure.  Makeup policy: the day you return for a quiz and the following day for an exam.  (Tests only given at 6:45 am.  Quizzes anytime before school).

Grading: Quarter and semester grades are determined on the cumulative work done in the class.  Each student will also be graded on his classroom discussion and cooperation with all activities.  Finally, students will receive grades for projects that will help determine the overall grade.

Academic Honesty: Copying from a published book, journal, or another student’s work is considered dishonest and will result a failure for that activity.  An incident of cheating will result in a conversation with the Academic Dean.  Please consult the student/parent handbook.  Any form of PLAGIARISM will result in an automatic failure (or other punishment at the teacher’s discretion).  All materials must be properly footnoted or quoted.

Classroom Behavior:  Students are expected to arrive at class prepared and on time.  Students must have all necessary materials.  Lateness results in demerits.  It is the responsibility of the student to familiarize himself with the student handbook.  Respect is something that is given each student as he enters the classroom.  It is expected that the students show the teacher and their peers that same respect.  Because all students have something to say, there will be no toleration of ridicule of any sort.  Disrespect of another individual (whether that be me or a classmate) will result in a minimum of 3 demerits.
