Required Texts: Characters in Conflict, Critical Thinking: Readings in Nonfiction, Lord of the Flies, Frankenstein, Last Days of Summer, Vocabulary Energizers, Merchant of Venice

Expectations:

            Preparation:

Homework must be finished prior to the beginning of class. All assignments must be written in ink with rough edges removed. Essays must be typed. Late assignments (if accepted) will be penalized in addition to 9th hour.

Good notes are imperative for good grades. Each student needs his own notebook exclusively for English.

Students will remain in class the entire period -- that means get to the restroom, locker, etc. prior to class.

            Respect:

Be aware of your own behavior as it impacts the class. Rudeness will not be tolerated. All rules in the school handbook are enforced.

            Enthusiasm:

English class is an adventure; jump into it!

            Participation:

Active and reasoned discussion is expected from each student.  If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get notes and assignments from the teacher. Students who are absent for one day will be expected to take exams and quizzes upon their return.

Grading: Points are accumulated across the semester and divided by the total to provide a percentage. Grade sheets are circulated several times per quarter to ensure grades have been accurately recorded. However, students are expected to keep track of their own scores. Since all work is returned promptly, there is no excuse for not knowing what your grade is. An extra credit assignment is generally provided once a semester.

There is no such thing as a “pop quiz” in this class. Quizzes are the norm; expect them after every reading assignment!

Let’s have a great year!
