Welcome to Freshman English! You will read a variety of excellent literature including the short story, the novel, drama. and poetry. This year you will also write at least ten different writing samples, starting with a paragraph and building to an essay coupled with basic grammar review. During the third quarter a speech unit will be introduced to help you gain confidence in public speaking. TEXT: Short Stories: Characters in Conflict Elements of Writing The Merchant of Venice Lord of the Flies Old Man and the Sea Book to be announced GRADING PROCEDURES: Quarter and semester grades are determined by dividing the total number possible points by the total possible points. There will be a test given for each piece of literature read and a cumulative quarter exam. There will be a number of quizzes given throughout the quarter; some may be unannounced. Writing and grammar instruction is part of the freshman curriculum. You will produce at least five writing samples a semester and be tested over grammar instruction. Effort grades are given at the quarter and the semester. The effort grade is an estimate of the student's work compared to his ability. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get your missed assignments and turn them in no later than one day after you return to class. If your absence is not excused, you will receive a grade of zero for missed assignments. All homework assignments are due at the beginning of the class period on the due date. Failure to turn in written homework on time will result in required attendance in ninth hour study hall that day. CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS: Come prepared, have proper supplies, do quality work, show respect toward self and others, follow both written and verbal directions, display positive communication.
