British Writers Course Description/ Requirements

This is a course for seniors. The course will provide the student with an overview of the major periods of Britain’s literary history and with a sense of how the literature of Britain developed in its historical context. We will investigate various themes of British literature that have endured the test of time and have influenced literature. Special attention will be given to the various voices of British culture. These ideas and issues will be explored through poetry, short stories, novels, nonfiction, and drama.

All work in this class is predicated on the belief that the teacher and the students are working together to develop each student’s potential spiritually, academically and socially. To that end, each student will work hard, every day, toward his goals.  The work efforts will take the following forms:

Course Requirements

The major focus of this course is literature. Therefore, students are expected to read all assignments. Students need to be prepared for pop quizzes and literary discussions. I encourage note taking while reading the assignments and notes may be used on quizzes. Missed quizzes must be completed on the student’s return; however, notes will not be allowed on makeup quizzes. Additionally, essays and various writing activities will be important components.

I will post on Center point each unit syllabus with an approximate test date.

Homework:  All homework (with the exception of that done in the notebook) must be typed.  All papers must have MLA heading.  Homework is due at the beginning of class on the due date.  Absence due to illness on the due date of an essay, paper or project must be emailed to the teacher or it will be considered late. Students who fail to turn in homework when it is due will receive a grade of zero. Students who, for legitimate reasons, are absent from class must arrange to find out what work has been assigned that is not on center point and complete the work by the day following their return to school.  It is the student’s responsibility to make certain all written work is submitted.   All major essays must be submitted to Turnitin.com.

Required Texts

The Language of Literature

Othello

Hamlet

Grading Policy: I attempt to provide a variety of assessments that may include individual and group projects in addition to quizzes, tests and essays. Projects typically are assigned in conjunction with novels or other longer works. I often give pop quizzes on reading assignments; you may use your notes unless it is a makeup quiz. After each major unit, you will have a test that will cover class notes as well as reading assignments.

I do not accept late work for daily assignments. However, if you are absent and miss a quiz, you may make it up on the day you return. If you are absent on the day of a test, you must be prepared to take it on the day you return. **Notice the repetition of information here- no excuse for “not knowing”

Grades will be posted as soon as assignments are graded.  You are responsible for keeping track of your own average. Please see me with any discrepancies. There is a reason I teach English, not math.

Essays:  Please be aware that it is expected that you submit work that is the best example of you ability. Your work should be polished and proof-read. Also, keep in mind that an A paper means exemplary work; work that is above and beyond the norm.

FYI: Turnitin.com will not accept late essays.

Academic Honesty:  Any copying from either a published source or any other source, including another student, is totally unacceptable.  Any incident of cheating will result in no credit for all involved parties.

Classroom Etiquette:  All students are expected to arrive at class prepared, on time, and with all necessary materials. When the bell rings, students must be seated with all necessary materials and ready for prayer.  Students may expect to be treated with respect by the teacher and other students.  Students are expected to treat each other and the teacher with respect.  At no time will any student ridicule another student or another student’s ideas or contributions to class discussion.  It is the responsibility of each student to contribute to an atmosphere where ideas flourish and acceptance of individual differences is the rule.  Any disruption of a positive learning environment will result in demerits according to the guidelines in the Student-Parent Handbook.  Students will place their demerit card on their desk immediately and quietly when asked.

Prayer:  After the first week students will be expected to begin the class with prayer. I will give the form that you will use turn in. We will proceed in alphabetical order so you will know when it is your turn. Each prayer is worth five points. If you are absent you will be expected to lead on the day you return. This is a no-brainer for extra points as I do NOT give extra credit.

******A Note on Absences

With the block schedule, class meetings carry greater significance than they have in the past.  This means that if you miss a particular day, you are responsible for geting notes, assignments and in-class work, meeting with me prior to the next class meeting to ask questions, and being up-to-date for the next day of class.  A student who takes a passive approach may miss a class on A day, then seek information over missed material on the next A day.  Essentially, that student will have missed nearly a week’s worth of class, and the impact on his grade will be significant.  Therefore, it is necessary to be proactive in dealing with absences.
