Catholic Social Teaching Semester Service Project

PROJECT OVERVIEW

As is stated in the mission statement of Prep, service to others is an integral component of our identity and is at the very core of what this school seeks to achieve.  In keeping with the study of Catholic social teaching, and the 1971 encyclical Octogesima Adveniens (A Call to Action), students enrolled in CST have the opportunity to live out Prep's mission by working on a series of service projects throughout the semester at the following sites:
Montclair Rehab and Retirement Home: CST students serve coffee and socialize with residents on Saturday mornings.
Camp Munroe: Camp Munroe is a recreational therapy program for persons with disabilities.  CST students volunteer on Saturday mornings, helping with activities that include art, music, cooking, sports, games, playground activities, and swimming.
Francis House: The Francis House is a homeless shelter.  CST students help serve dinner the 4th Sunday and on the 3rd Monday of every month.
Kid's Cafe: Kids Cafe is a program that provides after-school meals to hungry children.  CST students help to prepare and serve meals at the South Omaha location on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and the North Omaha location on Monday and Friday afternoons.
Hillside Elementary: CST students participate in the HOSTS Program (Helping Other Students to Achieve) on Monday and Thursday afternoons.
Big Brothers: CST students participate in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters mentoring program at local elementary schools on Monday afternoons.

Rose Blumkin Home: CST students play Bingo with residents on Wednesday nights.

Social Settlement: CST students tutor at Social Settlement on Mondays after school.
Field Club Elementary: CST students tutor at Field Club on Monday afternoons.
Just Friends: Just Friends is a peer mentoring and friendship program for teenagers with disabilities.  CST students participate in social and recreational activities with teens from Just Friends.

Each student enrolled in Catholic social teaching is required to contribute at least 14 hours of service to one of the semester service projects.  Students must complete all of their hours at the same site.
