Financial Aid

Prep's tuition is comparable to other private schools in the area, but Prep has more financial aid available than any other high school. No student should miss out on a Prep education because of lack of money.

As a private school, Prep is dependent on tuition to cover its operating expenses. Although tuition and fees for this year are an average of $7,085, the actual cost to educate a student is $9,535. The difference of $2,450 per student is made up by a combination of our endowment, the contributed services of the Jesuits and fund - raising. The tuition is paid in advance of each quarter unless other arrangements, such as monthly payments, have been made.

As far back as 1911, even before tuition was charged, Prep provided jobs at school to help students pay their expenses. To assist those students who qualify academically but who cannot afford tuition, Prep has established a financial aid program similar to those commonly offered by colleges and universities. Financial aid is available in three forms: Work Grants, Financial Assistance Grants, and Scholarships.

  1. Work Grants - Students who qualify, work at the school during the summer and/or the academic year. The $6 per hour "wage" is credited toward tuition. Under this program, tuition credit can be earned in a variety of jobs including: Cleaning or groundskeeping, switchboard operator, and lab or library assistant. The student must complete 150 hours of work to fulfill the work grant.  For more information contact Mary McGuire.
  2. Financial Assistance Grants - This plan is available to those students who need additional support beyond the work grant program and is based on the family's ability to pay. Money given is directly applied toward tuition costs.
  3. Scholarships -
    1. Academic - Based solely on the January entrance exam score.
    2. Archdiocesan - Based on need and parish grants based on leadership.
(Check with your parish for information and application form.)
    3. Special scholarships based on specific criteria and not solely on need. (Scholarships are usually not based on need but on academics or other factors.) How does it work? A freshman was granted an academic scholarship and because of need, he also received a work grant and other financial aid.
      Freshman tuition $6,935
      Work Grant $900
      Financial Assistance $3,500
      Balance Due $2,535

Here are two examples of families who qualify for financial aid: Mrs. Jones is the sole supporter for her two sons. She earns $29,000 a year. Her son, John, a sophomore, has qualified for $3,360 of financial aid and a $900 work grant. John has also received a $200 Archdiocesan scholarship. He works for the maintenance crew during the fall so that he can still compete on the wrestling team during the winter months. John will receive a total of $4,460 in financial assistance. Mrs. Jones is responsible for $2,575 of her son's tuition.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith have four children. Two sons attend Prep, a senior and a freshman. Mr. Smith earns $45,000 per year ; his wife works part - time earning $10,000 per year. The freshman qualified for $3,500 in financial assistance plus a $900 work grant. The senior, having an outside job, is expected to contribute to his education. He receives $3,500 in aid. The total aid to the family is $7,900. Mr. and Mrs. Smith are  responsible for $6,270 of their sons' tuition.

The Financial Aid form is given to all students at the Entrance Exam in January. Complete the form entirely and include all requested additional information. Return to the Prep Business Office no later than the date shown on the financial aid form. It is essential that the form be returned to Prep by the deadline. Applications for financial aid must be made each year a student attends Prep.

Please contact Mrs. Mary Mortensen in our business office (393-1190 x310) (Email) to discuss your needs.
